Berumerfehner Moor
The Berumerfehner Moor is a moor area in the East Frisian municipality of Großheide in Lower Saxony .
location
The moor area is located in the extreme southeast of the municipality of Großheide. The moor is named after the district of Berumerfehn , the only fen settlement in the Norderland . Parts of the Berumerfehner Moors belong to the Ewiges Meer nature reserve , which is named after the largest high moor lake of the same name .
In the north, the moor is connected to the Norder Tief via the Berumerfehn Canal , and in the south via the Ring Canal to the Ems-Jade Canal .
history
The Berumerfehner Moor is part of an extensive moor area that used to stretch between Hage and Aurich . In the course of the peat extraction , most of the areas were excavated and only a few parts have been preserved in their original state. The development of the moor for peat extraction began with the founding of the Norderfehn Fehn Colony by the Norder Fehn-Societaet in 1794. Later, the place Norderfehn was renamed Berumerfehn, after the nearby place Berum .
economy
In the Berumerfehner Moor area, neither peat nor gravel is extracted today. Aurich-Wiesmoor-Torfvertriebs GmbH was active in peat extraction there until 2013. All facilities were then dismantled. The excavation areas were rewetted and renatured to a residual peat thickness of at least 50 cm. On many of the former mining areas, peat moss growth has set in again to this day in 2016. The area is thus developing into an important habitat for fauna and flora, which is home to many endangered species. The gravel extraction on the edge of the Berumerfehner Moor was carried out by the ARGE Beekmann - Siebels and stopped some time before the peat extraction. Criticism of the soil degradation process led to the foundation of the citizens' initiative “Save the Berumerfehner Moor”.
