Development of the place name

The name Coldinne goes back to the monastery of the same name . There are various theories about the interpretation of the name. So it could either be a derivation of the name of the monastery ter waeren minne or a field name of Frisian-Low German origin, which could be translated either as "cold meadow", "uninhabited house" or "uninhabited inn".

Menstede, on the other hand, is a combination of the nickname “Meene” with “Stelle”, but could also mean “Place of the Maane” (= community).

coat of arms

Memorial stone for the former Coldinne monastery

Blazon : In green a silver wolf in front of a golden abbot's staff placed obliquely to the left , on it a silver, golden-lined velum .

Ulf Korn designed the local coat of arms approved in 1962. The abbot points to the former Coldinne monastery . The silver wolf is a reminder that the last wolf in East Frisia was killed in the remote heath, which is almost exclusively inhabited by shepherds.
