Charles Lapointe PC (born July 17, 1944 in Tadoussac , Québec ) is a Canadian university professor and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was for several years a member of the lower house and at times a minister.

Life

After attending school, Lapointe completed a course of study, which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then worked as a public service employee and university lecturer.

In the general election of July 8, 1974 , Lapointe was elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the lower house and represented the constituency of Charlevoix until his electoral defeat in the general election of September 4, 1984 . At the beginning of his parliamentary activities he was from June 30, 1974 to October 12, 1976 Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of Commons on Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

On October 1, 1977, he took over his first government office and was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport until March 26, 1979. He later became Minister of State for Small Enterprises and Tourism on March 3, 1980, and then Minister of State for External Relations between September 30, 1982 and November 8, 1983.

Thereafter, on August 12, 1983, Lapointe was appointed Minister of Utilities and Services in Canada's 22nd Cabinet by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau . This ministerial office also held in the 23rd government of Canada, formed by Trudeau's successor John Turner , from June 30 to September 16, 1984. At the same time, he was also Minister for Public Works from June 30 to September 16, 1984.

After leaving the government and the House of Commons, he moved to the private sector and was Vice President of the International Airplane Company and President for Business Development of the plant engineering and construction company SNC Lavalin . He has also been President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tourisme Montréal since 1989 . On December 3, 2002, Lapointe became chairman of the Canadian Tourism Commission , the government agency responsible for promoting tourism in Canada , and held that office until February 27, 2008.
