The 30th Canadian General Election ( English 30th Canadian General Election , French 30e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 8 July 1974th 264 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The Liberal Party of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau , who led a minority government for two years could increase their share of the vote and won an absolute majority of seats.

The vote

The main theme of the election campaign was the containment of high inflation . Opposition leader Robert Stanfield , leader of the Progressive Conservative Party , had proposed freezing prices and wages for 90 days. Trudeau saw this as an attack on the right of employers and workers to negotiate wages themselves and made the famous quote “Zap! You're frozen! ” (Zap! You're frozen!) Funny about it. Only a year later he introduced wage and price controls himself.

The election results split the country in two. The progressive conservatives were particularly strong in Western Canada , but the Liberals more than made up for this with their good results in Ontario and Québec . The New Democratic Party lost almost half of its seats, and the Social Credit Party also suffered losses.

The turnout was 71.0%.
