Canadian General Election 1949
The 21st Canadian general election ( English 21st Canadian General Election , French 21e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on 27 June 1949th 262 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ).
The vote
It was the first election in Canada in nearly thirty years without the Liberal Party being led by William Lyon Mackenzie King . King had resigned the previous year and was replaced by Louis Saint-Laurent as prime minister and party chairman. Saint-Laurent led his party to a fourth consecutive election victory; the Liberals won nearly 50% of the vote and secured an overwhelming majority of the seats.
The Progressive Conservative Party took office with George Alexander Drew , former Prime Minister of the Province of Ontario , as its new chair. But she did not succeed in achieving notable success outside her stronghold of Ontario and even suffered losses. The remaining parties, including the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and the Social Credit Party , also performed worse.
For the first time, residents of Newfoundland and Labrador took part in a nationwide election. This province had joined the Canadian Confederation just under four months earlier .
The turnout was 73.8%.
