Canadian General Election 1926
The 16th Canadian General Election ( English 16th Canadian General Election , French 16e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 14 September 1926th 245 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The election followed the King Byng affair , when the governor-general refused to dissolve parliament at the request of the liberal prime minister and the conservative government he installed was overthrown after just three months.
The vote
In the general election in 1925 that had the Liberal Party of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King won fewer seats than the Conservative Party of Arthur Meighen . However, King was determined to continue to rule and secured the support of the Progressive Party , which gave him a majority in the lower house.
The informal coalition broke up after a bribery scandal and King asked Governor General Julian Byng to dissolve parliament. Byng refused to comply and entrusted Meighen with the formation of a new government. Meighen's government failed after only three months due to a vote of no confidence , whereupon Byng dissolved parliament and called an early election . Although the Liberals got fewer votes than the Conservatives, they won more seats.
An electoral alliance of the liberals with progressive and liberal-progressive candidates distorted the results in some cases massively. The Conservatives in the province of Manitoba obtained almost 40% of all votes, but did not win a single seat. The reason for this was that candidates from three political camps ran against each other in only three constituencies. In the remaining 13 constituencies, the Conservatives were only confronted with the candidate who was predicted to have the highest chance of victory. The other parties decided not to run so that the opposition of the conservative candidate was not split up.
The turnout was 67.7%.
