The 34th Canadian General Election (English. 34th Canadian General Election , French. 34e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on 21 November 1988. 295 MPs of the Canadian House of Commons (English House of Commons , French Chambre des Communes ) were elected. The ruling Progressive Conservative Party of Brian Mulroney lost seven percent of the vote, but still achieved a comfortable absolute majority. The Liberal Party managed to recover from its heavy electoral defeat four years ago and more than doubled its number of seats.

The vote

The free trade agreement between Canada and the United States dominated the election campaign. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney signed it in October 1988, but it had not yet been ratified by Parliament. By John Turner cited Liberal Party spoke out against the agreement, as is the New Democratic Party of Ed Broadbent . After a few scandals, the Progressive-Conservative Party appeared to be weakened and the Liberals had legitimate hopes of regaining power after a four-year hiatus.

The opinion polls showed a mixed picture, the government and the opposition took turns in the lead. The progressive conservatives initially conducted a rather inconspicuous election campaign, but then went on to attack Turner's credibility. Associated with this was an expensive advertising campaign for the free trade agreement. This enabled the government to break away decisively.

Although the progressive conservatives lost seven percent of the vote, they remained by far the strongest force and were able to defend their absolute majority. The Liberals succeeded in more than doubling the number of their seats, thus making up for the losses of 1984; but it was nowhere near enough to win the election. The New Democrats achieved the best result ever, in the provinces of British Columbia and Saskatchewan they were even the strongest force.

The turnout was 75.3%.
