The 18th Canadian General Election ( English 18th Canadian General Election , French 18e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 14 October 1935th 245 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). By William Lyon Mackenzie King cited Liberal Party was after five years in opposition, the Conservative Party of Richard Bedford Bennett defeat and won an absolute majority of seats.

The vote

The main theme of the election campaign was the social consequences of the global economic crisis . Bennett, prime minister since 1930 , had done little to stimulate the economy in his early years in office. He was convinced that high tariffs and trade within the British Empire would be enough to overcome the recession. In the last months of his term, however, he came to his position, trying the popular New Deal of Franklin D. Roosevelt emulate. Disappointed with the high unemployment and inactivity of the federal government, voters were no longer willing to let the conservatives rule.

The conservatives were also affected by internal party tensions. In his early years in office, Bennett had angered those who advocated economic intervention. His turn to state intervention shortly before the election made him unreliable in his own party. Secretary of Commerce Henry Herbert Stevens resigned from the party and founded the Reconstruction Party .

King promised soft reforms to improve the economy, which met with approval from many voters. Despite a slightly lower share of the vote than five years earlier, the Liberals celebrated an overwhelming election victory and won 173 seats. The Reconstruction Party took many votes away from the Conservatives, bringing them to just 39 seats (the worst result until the party collapsed in 1993). The Liberals were to remain in power until 1957.

The Progressive Party and the United Farmers of Alberta , which had previously dominated Western Canada , had become meaningless and did not even run. Instead, two new movements emerged in the West. The socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation had 7 seats, the Social Credit Party even 17 seats.

The turnout was 74.2%.
