Canadian general election 1930
The 17th Canadian General Election ( English 17th Canadian General Election , French 17e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 28 July 1930th 245 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The Conservative Party of Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett became the strongest party and won an absolute majority of the seats, while the Liberal Party, led by William Lyon Mackenzie King , had to return to the opposition after four years in office.
The vote
The first effects of the global economic crisis were already clearly noticeable. Bennett promised decisive action during the election campaign and described the liberal economic policy of the 1920s as one of the causes of the economic misery. King apparently seemed oblivious to rising unemployment and insisted that Canada's prosperity was based on his government's economic policies. Calls for relief efforts were labeled as part of a "conservative conspiracy theory" and rejected.
Various other factors also played a role in King's defeat. The election campaign leadership of the Liberals was inefficient and repeatedly caused negative headlines. Bennett, on the other hand, presented himself as a “doer” and invested part of his own fortune in the election campaign. It was the first election campaign in which radio played an important role. Bennett made a far more lively and aggressive impression on the audience than the more deliberate King.
The turnout was 73.5%.
