Canadian General Election 1874
The third Canadian general election (Engl. 3rd Canadian General Election , French. 3e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on 22 January 1874. 206 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The Liberals replaced the previous conservative minority government and took over government responsibility for the first time.
The vote
The Conservative government of John Macdonald was overthrown by a vote of no confidence on November 5, 1873 after the Pacific scandal broke out . She had been accused of corruption in connection with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway's transcontinental railroad . Two days later, the Liberals led by Alexander Mackenzie formed a transitional government. Mackenzie immediately called a new election. The Conservatives failed to distance themselves from the scandal and suffered a major defeat.
For the first time, the residents of Prince Edward Island were eligible to vote. For the first time, the principle of secret voting was used.
The turnout was 69.6%.
