The 20th Canadian General Election ( English 20th Canadian General Election , French 20e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on 11 June 1945th 245 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The Liberal Party of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King won for the third time in a row, despite significant seat losses.

The vote

The Liberal Party , which had been in government for ten years and led Canada through World War II , stressed in its election campaign that the country still needed a stable government. In addition, the Liberals are the only party that is represented in sufficient numbers in all the provinces and can therefore meet the needs of all regions. Although they lost more than eleven percent of the vote and more than a third of their seats, due to the weakness of the opposition parties they remained the strongest force and only narrowly missed the absolute majority of seats.

After severe election defeats in 1935 and 1940, the conservatives moved more towards the middle of the political spectrum. For this purpose, the Conservative Party merged with the provincial offshoots of the Federal Progressive Party , which had since been dissolved , from which the new Progressive-Conservative Party emerged. The party led by John Bracken , the former Prime Minister of Manitoba , however, failed to achieve any notable success outside of Ontario . The success of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and the Social Credit Party remained largely limited to their strongholds, the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta , respectively .

The turnout was 75.3%.
