Canadian general election 1957
The 23 Canadian general election ( english 23rd Canadian General Election , French 23e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on 10 June 1957th 265 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). An unexpected victory by John Diefenbaker's Progressive Conservative Party ended the Liberal Party's 22-year reign and led to the formation of a minority government.
The vote
The Liberal Party had won five elections in a row, but was increasingly seen by the public as arrogant and worn out. A cabinet had ruled under Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent since November 1948 . Many Western Canadians felt excluded from the government and believed that the interests of the two largest provinces, Ontario and Québec , were too weighty. In 1956 the Progressive Conservative Party elected John Diefenbaker as its new leader.
Diefenbaker's election campaign highlighted Canadian nationalism and promised more money for social programs. With an ambitious investment program, the north of the country should also be better developed. This election campaign was the first to feature television. On television programs, Diefenbaker made a far more charismatic impression than incumbent Prime Minister Saint-Laurent.
The Liberals won slightly more votes, but the Progressive Conservatives won more seats. However, 21 seats were missing for the absolute majority. Diefenbaker formed a minority government and occasionally sought the support of smaller parties. Several liberal ministers were voted out.
The turnout was 74.1%.
