The 2nd Canadian general election (Engl. 2nd Canadian General Election , French. 2e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place from 20 July to 12 October 1872. 200 Members of the elected Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The Conservative Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald could defend their seat majority just with the support of independent MP and continued to provide the government.

The vote

Edward Blake , who held a seat in both the Canadian House of Commons and the Ontario Legislative Assembly , resigned as Prime Minister of the Province of Ontario after dual mandates at the federal and provincial levels had been abolished. Had the Liberal Party been victorious, Blake would have assumed the office of Prime Minister of Canada . The party had no official chairman until 1873, when Alexander Mackenzie was elected to this office. Blake was sick most of the campaign and it was Mackenzie who was campaigning in Ontario (but not in the other provinces).

The general election of 1872 was the first to be held in the new provinces of British Columbia and Manitoba . Shortly after joining the Canadian Confederation (1870 and 1872), separate elections were held in both provinces to enable adequate representation there before the end of the legislative period.

The turnout was 70.3%.
