A total of 265 seats

The 1985 Canadian general election took place on November 8, 1965. It was the 27th election of the Canadian House of Commons ( 27th Canadian General Election , French 27e élection fédérale canadienne ). 265 members of the lower house (English House of Commons , French Chambre des Communes ) were elected. The previously ruling Liberal Party led by Lester Pearson was able to gain a few seats, but again narrowly missed an absolute majority and was forced to form a minority government.

The vote

The Liberals pointed to the redemption of their 1963 election promises, particularly job creation, income tax cuts, and higher family allowances and student loans. The next big projects, the introduction of a general public health system and a pension fund system, could also be implemented with the support of smaller parties until the next election.

Despite losing the election, the former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker initially asserted himself as party leader of the Progressive Conservative Party , but was defeated at the party congress in 1967 and had to hand over the office to Robert Stanfield .

The New Democrats of Tommy Douglas recorded the largest increase in voter share, but only four additional seats resulted because of majority voting. After internal power struggles, a French-speaking party, the Ralliement créditiste , split off from the Social Credit Party of Canada and achieved a better result than the English-speaking parent party. The Parti Rhinocéros , a fun party led by the rhinoceros Cornelius I , was elected for the first time.

The turnout was 74.8%.
