Canadian general election 1972
The 29th Canadian General Election ( English 29th Canadian General Election , French 29e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 30 October 1,972th 264 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The Liberal Party of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau did remain strongest, but missed the absolute majority.
The vote
It was the second election with Trudeau at the helm of the Liberal Party. The “Trudeaumania”, which had dominated the media four years earlier, had largely died down. The economic situation was less positive than in previous years, and many Anglo-Canadians also found the official bilingualism , i.e. the equality of English and French at the federal level, to be an expensive waste of money. The Liberal election campaign was poorly conducted. Nonetheless, the opposition progressive conservatives could hardly benefit from it, as their chairman Robert Stanfield was seen as an honest politician, but was also considered clumsy.
On election night it still seemed as if the progressive conservatives had won 109 seats and thus narrowly won the election. When the count was completed the following day, however, it was clear that the Liberals had retained the upper hand despite losses. They were forced to form a minority government and were dependent on the support of the New Democratic Party in the lower house .
The turnout was 76.7%.
