The 19th Canadian General Election ( English 19th Canadian General Election , French 19e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on 26 March 1940th 245 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). There were only minor changes compared to the elections four and a half years earlier.

The vote

The election was overshadowed by World War II , which resulted in greater support from the incumbent Liberal government of William Lyon Mackenzie King . In response, opposition leader Robert James Manion's Conservative Party ran for election under the designation “National Government” with the intention of being able to form an all-party government based on the model of the unionist coalition of 1917 (but individual candidates named themselves still as conservatives). The attempt failed; the Conservatives did not gain a single seat, and Manion himself lost in his own constituency.

Prime Minister King promised that the issue of conscription would not arise because enough volunteers had volunteered. This promise was important because the French-speaking province of Québec , the stronghold of the Liberal Party , was, unlike the rest of the country, largely against the introduction of conscription. Over half of voters across the country then voted for the Liberals.

After the election, the liberal government came under increasing pressure from the military and the people of the English-speaking provinces. In order to be able to free himself from the election promise regarding conscription, King had a referendum carried out in 1942 (see also the conscription crisis of 1944 ).

The turnout was 69.9%.

1 This is just another name for the Conservative Party. The changes relate to the Conservative outcome in 1935.
2 New Democracy MPs later joined the Social Credit Party.
3 Two candidates ran under the name “New Democratic Party”. There is no connection whatsoever with today's New Democratic Party . These are possibly candidates from New Democracy who were incorrectly rated separately by the electoral authority.
