Tim Buck (born January 6, 1891 in Beccles , Great Britain , † March 11, 1973 ) was a Canadian communist politician. He was General Secretary of the Communist Party of Canada from 1929 to 1962 .

Life

Buck, who emigrated to Canada in 1910, was a mechanic by profession and was involved in the Canadian trade union movement before he co-founded the Communist Party of Canada in 1921. As one of the supporters of Stalin in Canada, he replaced the more Trotskyist- oriented leadership of the party in 1929 . In 1931 Buck was arrested and sentenced on suspicion of high treason . After his release from prison in 1934, he won more than 25% of the vote in the 1935 general election in Winnipeg . Although he resigned from chairmanship of the party in 1962, Buck retained a prominent position in the CPC until his death in 1973.
