1963 Canadian General Election
The 26th Canadian General Election ( English 26th Canadian General Election , French 26e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on April 8 1,963th 265 deputies were elected the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). Election winner was the Liberal Party of Lester Pearson had to make, but the absolute majority narrowly missed and therefore a minority government.
The vote
Since the 1962 election, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker's progressive-conservative government has had a minority. In addition, the government split into two camps. Diefenbaker and his allies spoke out against the stationing of American Bomarc nuclear missiles on Canadian soil, while numerous conservatives and the liberal opposition were in favor. Defense Secretary Douglas Harkness resigned on February 4, 1963 because of Diefenbaker's refusal. The following day the government lost a vote of no confidence , which resulted in an early election .
The Liberals were able to increase their share of the vote, but they were missing seven seats for an absolute majority. For their part, they formed a minority government that was dependent on the support of the New Democratic Party (NDP). The NDP suffered minor losses. The Social Credit Party also lost seats and, six months later, after internal power struggles, split into an English-speaking and a French-speaking party, the Ralliement créditiste .
The turnout was 79.2%, the highest in the country's history.
