The 28th Canadian General Election ( English 28th Canadian General Election , French 28e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on June 25 1968th 264 were elected deputies of the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). The Liberal Party, with its new chairman Pierre Trudeau , succeeded in gaining an absolute majority.

The vote

The Liberal election campaign was aimed entirely at the charismatic Pierre Trudeau, who in April 1968 surprisingly won the election of party chairman and succeeded Lester Pearson . With its non-conformist style, it corresponded completely to the zeitgeist of the 1968 movement and triggered a media hype that was jokingly called "Trudeaumania". Trudeau promised to expand the social works and thereby create a "just society".

Robert Stanfield has been at the forefront of the progressive conservatives since 1967 . The former Prime Minister of the Province of Nova Scotia , however, faced a deep split in the party that had emerged after the forced resignation of John Diefenbaker . The New Democratic Party , led by Tommy Douglas , did not achieve the breakthrough it had hoped for and remained limited to the left political spectrum. The Social Credit Party lost all seats, while the Ralliement créditiste , a French-Canadian split, rose to become the second largest party in the province of Québec .

For the first time, there was a televised debate with the leaders of the major parties before the election. For the last time, several provinces lost individual seats after a reorganization of the constituencies and for the only time the total number of seats decreased (264 compared to 265). Subsequent constitutional amendments made such a case much less likely in the future.

The turnout was 75.7%.
