1980 Canadian General Election
The 32nd Canadian General Election (English 32nd Canadian General Election , French 32e élection fédérale canadienne ) was held on February 18 1980th 282 MPs of the Canadian House of Commons (English House of Commons , French Chambre des Communes ) were elected. The election had become necessary because Joe Clark's progressive-conservative minority government had failed due to a vote of no confidence . The Liberal Party , led by Pierre Trudeau , was able to win an absolute majority and, after a little more than eight months of interruption, re-established the government.
The vote
Since the May 1979 election , Prime Minister Joe Clark had been criticized for his inexperience. In order to be able to form a stable government, he would have had to rely on the support of the six MPs of the Social Credit Party , but he refused to cooperate. When Treasury Secretary John Crosbie presented a budget that, contrary to election promises, provided for an increase in gasoline taxes, Bob Rae of the New Democratic Party (NDP) brought in a no-confidence vote , which was accepted by 139 votes to 133.
Pierre Trudeau had announced his resignation as party leader of the Liberals after the last election. In the meantime, however, no successor had been elected, which is why he withdrew his announcement. Trudeau led the Liberals to victory. However, the election result clearly separated the country: More than half of the Liberal MPs came from Québec (where they had won 74 out of 75 constituencies), while the party was almost completely absent in Western Canada . The opposite was true for the progressive conservatives: great successes in the west were matched by a few seats in the east.
The NDP achieved its best result so far. In contrast, the Social Credit Party, whose abstention from the vote of no confidence had made the early election necessary, lost all remaining seats and subsequently sank into complete insignificance. The electoral success of the fun party Parti Rhinocéros caused a sensation , which received over 1% of the vote (in Québec even 3%).
The turnout was 69.3%.
