1962 Canadian General Election
The Canadian general election 1962 ( English 25th Canadian General Election , French 25e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on June 18, 1962. It was the 25th selection of the Canadian House of Commons (Engl. House of Commons , fr. Chambre des Communes ). Its 265 members were elected.
The previously ruling progressive-conservative party of John Diefenbaker suffered heavy losses, but remained in power with a minority government.
The vote
The progressive-conservative government of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker had ruled with the largest majority any party had ever won in Canada's lower house for the past four years. Before the election, however, the unemployment rate was high and the value of the Canadian dollar was low. In addition, there were controversial decisions such as the discontinuation of the development of the Avro Arrow fighter aircraft . Even so, opposition leader Lester Pearson's Liberal Party failed to replace the government, but won enough seats to force Diefenbaker to form a minority government.
The New Democratic Party , which emerged from the alliance of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the Canadian Labor Congress and was led by Tommy Douglas , the former Prime Minister of Saskatchewan , ran for the first time in a general election . Although it was able to increase significantly compared to the result of the CCF, the breakthrough predicted in opinion polls did not succeed. After a four-year hiatus, the Social Credit Party was back in the House of Commons. However, almost all of its MPs were elected in Québec , while the traditional stronghold of Western Canada was poorly represented.
For the first time, all indigenous people were eligible to vote. The turnout was 79.0%.
