The construction of the church was initiated by the Protestant church building association founded in 1901. In 1906, around 9,000 Protestants were looked after in the Halensee district; the building of a church was seen as urgent. The foundation stone for the building was laid on October 21, 1908 . The master bricklayer and building contractor Otto Schnock created the design of the church as a member of the church building association. The church was consecrated on September 11, 1910.

The church was initially named after the nearby square, Kirche am Hochmeisterplatz . The Roman Catholic Teutonic Order , after whose highest office, the Grand Master , the square is named, has no connection with the Church; she was always Protestant. In 1935 it was given the name Hochmeisterkirche, as it was called long before.

In 1935 the interior was redesigned.

The church was hit twice by bombs in Allied air raids during World War II , around 25 percent of the structure was destroyed. In 1943 the roof structure burned out after an attack and in 1945 the church tower was damaged. In 1953 the congregation began to rebuild, on October 31, 1958, the church was consecrated again by Otto Dibelius , the then Bishop of Berlin and Brandenburg .

The parish council decided to renovate the building in 1985. The necessary financial resources were raised through donations and the support of the Wilmersdorf parish and the Berlin regional church. The interior was renewed and the dome was redesigned.

Building description

Otto Schnock designed the church in the neo-Romanesque style . The base is made of granite , above it the building shows red brick masonry with white plaster mirrors.

In front of the entrance there are panels that were taken from the old stone altar in 1987 and provided with inscriptions.

Furnishing

Since 1987 the church has a tiled floor which has the chorus of marble and in the remaining area of ceramics there (with underfloor heating). The original stone altar was replaced by an altar made of cedar wood , and the seating was also renewed.

The dome was redesigned by the sculptor Günter Anlauf ; There are also two sculptures in the church from Anlauf.

The 3.80 m × 6.80 m large altarpiece entitled "Easter and the Resurrection of the Dead" was made by Dominique Rebourgeon.

In the former sacristy hangs the painting "The tablecloth from the Holy Communion of Leonardo da Vinci" by the painter Manfred Sillner . Further pictures are hung in the church, for example three pictures by Christian Bernhard Rode from the 18th century on the right .

The four large, arched church windows with colored glazing were used during the renovation according to a design by Ernst Rettig in the 1950s. They show symbols of the four evangelists.

organ

The organ in the church comes from the workshop of Karl Schuke , the disposition of which is recorded in the organ database . It was installed in 1959 in place of the original organ from GF Steinmeyer & Co.'s workshop .

Peal

The three cast steel bells were made in 1921 by the Bochumer Verein ; they replaced the original bronze bells melted down for armament purposes in the First World War .
