Berlin and its buildings

Berlin and its Buildings , mostly abbreviated to BusB , is a series of books on the history of Berlin architecture that has been published by the Architects and Engineers Association of Berlin (AIV) since 1877 .

Edition history

In the 19th century, two series with two and three volumes were published, which were republished as a facsimile in the 1980s . The first volume of the current third series appeared in 1964; With 24 volumes to date, it is considered to be the most comprehensive documentation of the buildings in Berlin, alongside the monument topography .

The current series covers the structural development of Berlin in the 20th century and functions here as a building inventory. It was published by the Berlin publisher Ernst & Sohn until 1998 , from 2002 by the Petersberger Imhof Verlag , and since 2009 by the Berlin DOM Verlag. At Verlag Ernst the volumes had a portrait format of 23 cm × 30 cm, at Imhof the somewhat wider portrait format 24 cm × 31 cm. DOM switched to a landscape format of 30 cm × 34 cm. All volumes have a descriptive part, in which, in addition to the building description, the development of the respective area is presented. This is followed by a tabular overview, from which the location, dates of construction, expansion and, if necessary, the demolition as well as basic technical data and literature references can be found for each building recorded.

Volume 1, published in 2009, is intended to conclude the third series. The architectural historian Christoph Bernhardt criticized the depiction of the period from 1975 to the present by Hans Stimmann in this volume, as Stimmann, as Berlin Senate Building Director, had shaped this period himself. In addition, the architectural history of East Berlin is treated in an inappropriately brief manner. The reviewer of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , on the other hand, found the dual role of Stimmann as politically responsible and descriptive author appealing, but regretted abandoning the "scientific format" of a historical treatise.
