The Rivière au Tonnerre ( French for "thundering river") is a river in the administrative region of Côte-Nord in the Canadian province of Québec .
The Rivière au Tonnerre rises 6 km west of Lac Magpie in the area of the Canadian Shield in the south of the Labrador Peninsula . From there it flows through the regional county town of Minganie in a southerly direction. It finally flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence about halfway between Sept-Îles and Havre-Saint-Pierre . The estuary is 2.5 km west of the Pointe au Tonnerre headland . The Route 138 crosses the Rivière au Tonnerre immediately before its mouth. The river flows through the area of the commune of Rivière-au-Tonnerre in the lower reaches . The Rivière au Tonnerre has a length of 85 km. It drains an area of 694 km². The mean discharge is 21 m³ / s.
At the lower reaches of the river there are several waterfalls from which the river owes its name. The Chute Grand Sault waterfall ( ⊙ ) is around 30 m high, 5 km above the estuary . The Chute Petit Sault ( ⊙ ) is just 1 km from the estuary.
