The Rivière Portneuf is a left tributary of the Saint Lawrence River in the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean and Côte-Nord administrative regions of the Canadian province of Québec .
The Rivière Portneuf forms the outflow of Lac Portneuf . It flows in a predominantly east-southeast direction and flows into the confluence of the Saint Lawrence River at Portneuf-sur-Mer , about 230 km east of the provincial capital Québec . Immediately before the estuary, Route 138 crosses the river. The port of Portneuf-sur-Mer is located on the eastern bank of the river at the mouth of the Rivière Portneuf.
To the west of the Rivière Portneuf is the catchment area of the Rivière Saguenay , to the east the Rivière aux Outardes runs . The river length is 182 km. The catchment area of the Rivière Portneuf covers 2642 km².
Hydropower plants
Since May 3, 1996, three run-of-river power plants have been in operation on the Rivière Portneuf with a total output of 25.9 MW. Construction began in October 1994.
