history

With the support of local guides, the geologist Henry Youle Hind (1823-1903) explored and mapped the course of the river and the side valleys as far as the headwaters on behalf of the government around 1860. His two-volume travel and research report appeared in 1863.

The name of the river probably has its origin from the old French word moïse or moyse , which means something like "swampy banks".

The Mishta-shipiunnu (" Innu from the Moisie River") call the river Mishta-shipu ("Great River", derived from mishau - "large" and shipu - "River"). They traditionally use the river to reach their northern hunting and fishing grounds. Larger sections of the river are protected by private fishing clubs. In recent times there have been initiatives to implement hydraulic engineering projects on the Rivière Moisie. However, the Québec government decided to declare much of the river's drainage basin as an aquatic reserve. This prevents logging , mining and hydropower projects , but allows hunting and fly fishing .

The river is the main spawning area for Atlantic salmon in eastern North America.
