history

Settlement began at the beginning of the 19th century, mainly by Irish immigrants. The place name can be traced back to an influential settler family, because the church records of that time record several people with the surname Shannon. Decisive for the development of the place were the growing timber industry from around 1850 and the opening of a sawmill in 1860. In the 1861 census, two thirds of the population were of Irish descent, around 1900 around half. The CFB Valcartier military base immediately adjacent to Shannon was opened in 1914. Shannon initially belonged to the parish of Sainte-Catherine-de-Fossambault and has been an independent parish since 1947. Since 2002 it has been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association .
