Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier is a city in the south of the Canadian province of Quebec . It is located in the administrative region Capitale-Nationale , about 35 km west of the center of the provincial capital Québec . Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier belongs to the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) La Jacques-Cartier , has an area of 121.20 km² and has 6,319 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier is located on the Rivière Jacques-Cartier , a tributary of the Saint Lawrence River , with the city center on the south bank. The wide river valley is bordered to the east and west by the foothills of the Laurentine Mountains . On the north-eastern border, the city owns a small portion of Lac Saint-Joseph. This lake is drained by Rivière Ontaritzi, which flows into the Rivière Jacques-Cartier opposite the city center. In the far north of the urban area is the Lac du Ventre Rouge.
Neighboring municipalities are Lac-Saint-Joseph and Fossambault-sur-le-Lac in the north, Shannon in the northeast, Québec in the east, Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures in the south, Pont-Rouge in the southwest, Lac-Sergent in the west and Saint- Raymond to the northwest.
history
Settlement began at the beginning of the 19th century, initially mainly by Irish immigrants. In 1824 the parish of Sainte-Catherine-de-Fossambault was founded, and in 1855 that of the civil parish of Sainte-Catherine. It was named after the mother of the royal adviser Jacques Nau de La Boissière et de Fossambault, owner of the Seigneurie Fossambault established in the late 17th century . To avoid confusion with places of the same name, the municipality changed its name in 1984 to Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier. This received city status in 2000. Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier has been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association since 2002 .

According to the 2011 census, Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier had 6,319 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 52.1 inh / km². 96.7% of the population stated French as their main language, the share of English was 2.0%. 0.5% described themselves as bilingual (French and English), other languages and multiple answers accounted for 0.8%. Only French spoke 66.4%. In 2001, 96.2% of the population were Roman Catholic , 0.9% Protestant, and 2.9% non-denominational.
