The River Rivière Jacques-Cartier ( English Jacques-Cartier River ) is a left tributary of the Saint Lawrence River in the Canadian province of Quebec .
It has a length of 161 km. Its origins lie in the Lac Jacques-Cartier lake in the Réserve faunique des Laurentides . From there it flows mainly in a southerly direction before it meets the Saint Lawrence River at Donnacona , about 30 km west of the city of Québec .
The river has been nominated for Canadian Heritage River status .
geography
The river drains an area of 2515 km². It flows through the Laurentine Mountains in the geological region of Grenville for nearly 100 miles , one of the youngest stretches of the Canadian Shield , which was formed 995 million years ago. It then flows through the sedimentary rocks of the St. Lawrence Lowlands for another 17 km, from the municipality of Pont-Rouge to its mouth.
The catchment area includes mostly undeveloped or protected landscapes, especially on its upper reaches. In fact, 77 percent of its river length is in the Réserve faunique des Laurentides and the Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier , in which there is a steep valley formed by glaciers that was formed during the last ice age.
25,000 people live on its lower reaches, where it flows through Portneuf (regional county parish ) and the parishes of Tewkesbury , Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier , Shannon , Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier , Pont-Rouge and Donnacona.
Important tributaries are:
- Rivière aux Pommes ("Apple River")
- Rivière Sautauriski
- Rivière Ontaritzi
- Rivière à l'Épaule ("Shoulder River")
- Rivière Cachée ("Hidden River")
- Rivière Launière
