Railway bridge over the Rivière Jacques-Cartier near Pont-Rouge |
Pont-Rouge is a city ( ville ) in the MRC Portneuf of the Canadian province of Québec .
The city is located 40 km west of the provincial capital Québec . It stretches along the Jacques Cartier River , which flows into the Saint Lawrence River near the city of Donnacona to the south . A logistically and strategically significant bridge crosses the river in the south of the town; it is part of the historic link between Montréal and Québec, the chemin du rois .
The first efforts to establish permanent settlement date back to 1769. Officially founded by Archbishop Monseigneur Baillargeon as a church site in 1867 , the community of Pont-Rouge grew to its present size thanks to its location on the important postal and transport route Montréal-Québec . The division of the territory into ecclesiastical and urban parishes in 1911 was reversed by a decree on January 3, 1996. The younger settlements since the 1960s and the settlement of small industrial and commercial enterprises since the middle of the 20th century had a strong influence on the population.
Famous sons and daughters of the city are Joé Juneau , Jean-Marc Richard and Michel Petit, as well as the sport swimmer Lyne Beaumont . Le center récréatif de Joé Juneau , a sports and leisure center, offers local youth a wide range of physical activity, including in particular figure skating and ice hockey.
