history

The yellow flag goes back to the traditional flag of the Annamite ruler . The three red stripes symbolize the three parts of Vietnam ( Tonkin , Annam and Cochinchina ). Emperor Khải Định introduced the two outer red stripes in 1916. The third middle stripe was introduced in 1945 for the Empire of Vietnam . The stripes had a width ratio of 5: 1: 1: 1: 1: 1: 5, the middle red stripe was interrupted in a ratio of 5: 1: 5. The aspect ratio of the flag was 3: 5. In 1948 the break in the middle was abolished and the final shape was defined. In 1954, South Vietnam became independent under the name of the State of Vietnam and retained the old flag.

After the surrender of South Vietnam on April 30, 1975, the Communist-dominated Republic of South Vietnam was founded. The old flag was replaced by the flag of the FNL until unification with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam ( North Vietnam ) in July 1976 .
