history

Originally the flag of the Emperor of Annam was yellow. From 1920 to 1945 a horizontally divided flag in yellow-red-yellow served as the flag of the ruling Nguyễn dynasty .

The flag of the Empire of Vietnam from 1945 was also based on the imperial colors, but received a third interrupted stripe in the middle.

The red flag with a yellow star was first used at a meeting of the Communist Party of Indochina in November 1940 as a symbol of the communist independence movement. The actual creator of the flag is not known, but it is said to have been party cadres from the south who presented the design.

The People's Republic (also North Vietnam ) founded in 1945 as a result of the August Revolution introduced a symbolism similar to the current flag. On a red cloth, a yellow star was shown in the center, which is somewhat more compact than today's.

The state of Vietnam , founded in 1948, adopted the flag introduced by Emperor Bảo Đại in 1948 . The interruption in the third strip has been abolished. This flag was used by South Vietnam until the end of the Vietnam War . It was abolished on April 30, 1975.

After the victory of North Vietnam and the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (FNL) , the flag of the FNL was used as the national flag between April 30, 1975 and July 2, 1976 . With the reunification of the two parts of the country on July 2nd, the North Vietnamese flag became the national flag of all of Vietnam .
