The flag of the Republic of Cyprus is a sovereign symbol of the Republic of Cyprus , which was introduced with the independence of the island of Cyprus from Great Britain in 1960.
Description and meaning
The flag of the Republic of Cyprus is white with an image of the island. The color of the island image refers to the metal copper , which dates back to 3000 BC Was discovered in Cyprus and is named after the island. There are two branches of olive trees under the island . They stand for the two ethnic groups in Cyprus and their peaceful coexistence. Even after Turkey occupied the northern part of the republic, the flag was retained.
It is probably the oldest national flag that shows the country's outlines. Other examples would be the flag of Bangladesh between 1971 and 1972 and, since 2008, the flag of Kosovo . Other national flags stylize geographic features of the country, for example the Tuvalu flag shows the arrangement of the islands as stars.
history
According to the 1960 Constitution, the flag of the newly independent state should be chosen jointly by the President and Vice-President of the Republic. In the competition it was expressly not allowed to use the colors blue or red, nor a cross or a star. The design selected from the competition comes from the Turkish-Cypriot artist İsmet Güney (1932–2009). Güney received 500 Cyprus pounds from then President Archbishop Makarios as a prize in the selection competition.
The first version of the national flag, used between April and August 1960, showed the outline of the island in gold, but the island area in white. The flag was changed again in August 2006, when the aspect ratio, the representation of the olive branches and the colors of the island and the olive branches were redefined.
