The Palestinian flag is the flag of the Palestinian Territories ( West Bank and Gaza Strip ). It is also the flag of the State of Palestine .

description

The flag is in the pan-Arab colors of white, black, green and red. The red triangle extends one third into the flag.

Although it has only been the flag of Palestine since 1948, it has a much longer history. It was the flag of the Kingdom of Hejaz from around 1920 to 1926, the flag of Transjordan from 1921 to 1928 and that of the Arab Federation in 1958 . It is also identical to the flag of the Ba'ath Party . Its back is also identical to the back of the flag of Western Sahara .

history

The region of Palestine belonged to the Ottoman Empire until the First World War . After the defeat and occupation of Palestine by British troops in 1917, the Holy Land became a Mandate area under the authority of the League of Nations . This British mandate of Palestine (1923 to 1948) initially did not fly its own flag. In 1926 a Blue Ensign with a white disc and the inscription Palestine Customs was introduced for the customs authorities. In 1927 a Red Ensign was used for the first time on ships registered in the mandate area. The white disk was labeled Palestine . In 1929 the word Customs was removed from Blue Ensign . The flags were in use until the end of the mandate in 1948.

In March 1948, after the British had withdrawn from Gaza, the all- Palestinian government chose the flag of the Arab revolt of 1916 against the Ottoman Empire as the national flag of a Palestinian state. The flag was originally that of the Kingdom of Hejaz and became a symbol of the Arab national movement in 1917 and of the Ba'ath Party in 1947 . The flag was used in Gaza until the Egyptian army arrived two months later.

During the occupation and administration of the Gaza Strip by the Kingdom of Egypt (from 1952: Republic of Egypt , from 1958: United Arab Republic ) and the West Bank by Transjordan (from 1950: Jordan ) from 1948 to 1967, the flags of the respective state were in effect there.

The Palestinians adopted the flag with the stripes in black, white and green at the Palestine Conference on October 18, 1948 in Gaza. The Arab League followed this decision. On May 28, 1964, it was officially confirmed at the constitution of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) and the establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Jerusalem.

Since 1974, when the Arab League declared the PLO to be the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and the UN granted the PLO observer status, the flag has been internationally recognized as the flag of the Palestinians.

Palestinian flags at the tomb of Yasser Arafat

In 1988, following a resolution by the Palestinian National Council in Algiers , Yasser Arafat proclaimed the state of Palestine, which however has not yet become a member of the UN, although it is now recognized by 137 UN member states.

The flag has been banned in Israel since 1967, but has been unofficially widely tolerated since the Oslo Agreement was signed in 1993.

In December 2006, at a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas in Jerusalem , the Palestinian flag was flown for the first time next to the flag of Israel .
