Palestinian National Council
The Palestinian National Council ( Arabic المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني, DMG al-Maǧlis al-waṭanī al-Filasṭīnī ; English Palestinian National Council , PNC for short ) is the highest legislative body of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It elects the Executive Committee of the PLO and met every two years until 1998. Between the meetings, he is represented by the Central Committee of the PLO.
The Palestinian National Council used to function as a parliament in exile . Its members represent the various social movements, parties and groups in exile of the Palestinians. Today's parliament, since 1996, is the Palestinian Legislative Council , which sends 188 representatives to the 618-strong PNC.
The founding session of the PNC took place from May 28 to June 1, 1964 in East Jerusalem under the chairmanship of Ahmad Shukeiri (1908–1980), at which a Palestinian National Charter was passed and the PLO was founded. On November 15, 1988, the PNC passed the Palestinian declaration of independence at its meeting in Algiers . On April 24, 1996, the PNC finally recognized Israel's right to exist ( reaffirmed in Gaza in 1998 in the presence of US President Bill Clinton ), although the extent to which contrary passages in the National Charter continue to apply is disputed.
