The flag of Macau shows a white lotus blossom on a light green background , underneath a stylized bridge over a body of water. An arch of five golden, five-pointed stars extends over the flower, the middle one being slightly larger than the others.

Flags of Macau during the colonial period

Until 1999 Macau was under Portuguese administration. During this time, the flag of Portugal was used in Macau . In 1967 there was a proposal to add the respective coat of arms of the colony to the flag of Portugal for the colonies . However, the proposal was not implemented.

But there was a light blue flag of the colonial government with the then large coat of arms of Macau . The Loyal Senate ( Leal Senado ), the municipal parliament of Macau, also carried its own flag with the coat of arms of Portugal with a golden crown and two angels as shield bearers on a light blue background, above the (heraldic) right one hovered the cross of the Order of Christ , above the second one Armillary sphere , as it can also be found on the flag of Portugal. Under the coats of arms and angels was a banner with the official name of the city and the motto: "CIDADE DE NOME DE DEUS DE MACAU NÃO HÁ OUTRA MAIS LEAL" ("City of the name of the Lord of Macau - no one is more loyal"). The flag is still used today by many emigrants as an identification symbol.
