description
The design of the flag is inspired by the flag of the USA . The 14 red and white stripes of the flag represent the original 14 states of Malaysia . For the same reason, the star has 14 points. Red and white are traditional Malay colors . The blue upper leech originally indicated the connection to the Commonwealth , later the symbolism was reinterpreted as the unity of the Malaysian people. Yellow is the royal color.
history
The British Straits Settlements received their own flag in 1874, with the white disc removed in 1925 and added back in 1942. In 1946 the colony was dissolved.
British North Borneo received its colonial flag in 1882 and ran it until it joined the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
Other parts of the British possessions also carried Blue Ensigns with their respective coat of arms until independence .

In 1905, the Federation of Malay Sultanates under British sovereignty adopted a coat of arms and a flag. The flag was horizontally striped white-red-yellow-black:
- White for Perak ,
- Yellow for Negeri Sembilan ,
- Red for Selangor and
- Black for Pahang .
In the center of the flag was a white oval with a leaping tiger.
On February 1, 1948, the Malaya Federation was constituted and on May 26, 1950, it hoisted a national flag, the design of which is still valid today. However, the star had 11 instead of 14 points and 11 instead of 14 stripes. These stood for the two "settlements" Malacca and Penang and the nine states of Perak , Selangor , Negeri Sembilan , Pahang , Johore , Kedah , Kelantan , Perlis and Trengganu .
With the accession of Sarawak , Sabah and Singapore , the Malaysia Federation was created in 1963. This increased the number of stripes and spikes to 14. This flag remained unchanged when Singapore left the Federation in 1965.
