Description and meaning

The flag of Abkhazia as a dress

Four green and three white stripes are arranged horizontally one below the other. In the upper left corner there is a red canton with a white hand around which seven white, five-pointed stars are arranged in a semicircle. The stars all point upwards.

The model of the symbol of the hand on a red background is a historical flag of Sebastopol , today's capital Sukhumi . The open hand now stands for the Abkhaz nation. The seven stars stand for the seven regions of the country: Sadzen , Bzyp , Gumaa , Abzhywa , Samurzaqan , Dal-Tsabal and Pskhuy-Aibga . The seven is considered a sacred number in Abkhazia, hence seven stripes, whereby the alternation between green and white stands for the tolerance between Islam and Christianity .

history

The flag of Sebastopol is listed in a book from 1350.

During the Soviet era , Abkhazia had its own flag from 1925. A flag from the early 1920s is often reported, but the pictures of this flag have various errors, so that it is probably a false report. The same applies to a flag that is said to have existed between 1930 and 1931. Between 1925 and 1931 a Soviet-style flag was used: red with a hammer, sickle and star and the Cyrillic letters CCPA for Soviet Socialist Republic of Abkhazia . It is possible that a flag with the Latin abbreviation SSRA was used from 1926 , because the Latin alphabet was used from that point on. There are various details about the correct arrangement.

In 1931 Abkhazia became an ASSR within Georgia. In Article 84 of the 1935 Constitution, the Cyrillic abbreviation ACCPA (ASSRA) is used in the flag for the ASSR . There is no evidence of the appearance of the flag in front of it. The constitution of October 2, 1937 stipulated that only the name of the Georgian SSR was listed on the red flag in the languages Georgian (Georgian script), Abkhazian (Latin) and Russian (Cyrillic). From 1938 the Georgian script was used for Abkhazian. The flag changed accordingly. This was retained until 1951. From 1951 to 1978 the flag of the Georgian SSR was used. The Cyrillic lettering Abkhazian ASSR was added to the Abkhazian constitution of June 6, 1978 (Article 160) . Abkhazian was not abbreviated, as is sometimes reported. In 1989 a red flag with a golden sun and the designation SSR Abkhazia was introduced . All flags of the Soviet era had no lettering, hammer, sickle or star on the back.
