The flag of Saudi Arabia was introduced in 1932 and adopted in its current form on March 15, 1973.

Meaning and description

The national flag shows a white, horizontally arranged sword on a green background, above it white Arabic letters. Green is the color of Islam , more precisely the color of Muhammad . The scriptures reproduce the creed of Islam ( Shahāda ):

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
Lā ilāha illā 'llāhu Muḥammadun rasūlu' llāhi :
There is no deity but God and Muhammad is his messenger .

The smooth sword symbolizes the military triumphs of Islam, the Saud family and the Wahhabis. It represents justice and righteousness.

The two sides of the flag have the same design so that the Shahāda can be read from right to left on both sides: on the front, the reading direction runs from the flight section towards the leech , on the back from the leech towards the flight section. The sword handle is positioned on both sides under the beginning of the Shahāda, so that the point of the sword points on the front in the direction of the liek and on the back in the direction of the flight part.

protocol

Mourning flags for the victims of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake in Hong Kong . The flag of Saudi Arabia remains at full height.

Because of the Islamic creed (Shahāda) depicted on the flag, the flag may not be raised at half-mast .

The creed also forces the Saudis to treat the flag with even greater respect than is usually the case with national flags. For example, a Saudi is not allowed to dispose of or destroy a depicted national flag because of the Shahada. This leads to problems in particular when international companies, unaware of this fact, print the Saudi national flag on disposable items (packaging, cans, etc.), for example to mark a list of ingredients in Arabic.

history

The Saudi Arabian flag is derived from the flag of Najd , one of the predecessor states of Saudi Arabia. For the flag of Hejaz , the other predecessor state, see here .
