meaning
The national flag consists of the Pan-Arabic colors , of three horizontal stripes of equal size: black above, white in the middle and green below. Above it is a red triangle on the left edge. Inside is a white, seven-pointed star.
The horizontal colors stand for the Caliphate of the Abbasid (black), Umayyad (white) and Fatimid (green). The red triangle for the Hashimite dynasty and the Arab resistance.
The seven-pointed star has a double meaning: on the one hand it stands for the seven verses of the first sura of the Koran , on the other hand for the unity of the Arab tribes. Another explanation sees in it the seven hills on which the state capital Amman originally stood.
history
The flag of Jordan is based on the flag of the Arab resistance to the Ottoman Empire during the First World War . This was the flag of the Kingdom of Hejaz from 1916 to around 1920 and the flag of Palestine in 1948 . Between 1921 and 1928 a flag without a star was used, which was also that of the Kingdom of Hejaz from around 1920 to 1926 and that of the Arab Federation in 1958 . Today it is still the flag of the Ba'ath Party and, since 1948, the flag of Palestine.
