The flag of Bhutan is in the Chinese style and is strongly reminiscent of the golden yellow flag of the Chinese Empire .

meaning

  • Saffron yellow represents the sovereignty of the king and his direction of worldly and spiritual affairs.
  • Orange red stands for the spiritual violence of Buddhism, which is represented in Bhutan by the Buddhist sects Kagyüpa and Nyingmapa .

The wingless, black and white dragon on the one hand symbolizes the country name of Bhutan, Druk-Gyalkhap (dragon kingdom ), on the other hand it stands for the thunder, which can often be heard in the mountainous landscape of Bhutan and is attributed to the voice of the dragon. In addition, the dragon holding jewels is a symbol for the universe .

The dragon has only three claws pointing forward. Only dragons that represent the Chinese emperor have four claws.
