history

South Yemen

In the 19th century, the Arab states in the south of what is now Yemen came under British influence. In 1959 the eastern part formed the Protectorate of South Arabia , the western part the Federation of the United Arab Emirates of the South , and later the South Arab Federation .

The British Protectorate of the South Arab Federation, together with the Protectorate of South Arabia, declared its independence on November 30, 1967 and introduced its own tricolor as the Democratic People's Republic of Yemen , which showed a light blue triangle with a red star on the side of the mast. The blue triangle differed significantly from the usual pan-Arab color scheme to a degree that is unique in Arab states.

The past of the tyrannical, colonial and feudal rulers was symbolized by the black stripe, white stood for peace and red for revolution. The light blue triangle should symbolize the people led by the National Liberation Front, the red star. This used a red-white-black tricolor from which the national flag of South Yemen was derived, but which itself was modeled on the similar-looking Arab liberation flag from 1952 .

North Yemen

The Kingdom of Yemen (Northern Yemen) gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1911 . Between 1918 and 1923 the kingdom, like many other Arab states, carried a red flag. In 1923 the Shahāda was added in white letters. From 1927 to 1962, the Kingdom of Yemen carried a red flag with a white sword and five white stars. In 1958 the kingdom became a confederation with the United Arab Republic . The so-called United Arab States (until 1961) did not have a flag of their own, but with the conversion of the kingdom into the Yemeni Arab Republic in 1962, a red, white and black tricolor flag similar to the flag of the United Arab Republic was introduced as the national flag, but only with one green star in the middle.

The flag of North Yemen was also based on the Arab liberation flag. Red stood for the revolutionary spirit of the Yemeni people, white for hope for a better future and black was a reminder of the dark past. The star stood for unity and independence.
