The flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was introduced on March 9, 1984.

Description and name

It was designed based on the Turkish flag . On the white background are a red crescent moon , a red star and two red stripes.

The Turkish designations of the flag are [Kuzey] Kıbrıs Türk Bayrağı (Turkish flag of [Northern] Cyprus) and Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti [Ulusal / Milli] Bayrağı ( national flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus).

history

After an attempted coup by Greek Cypriot officers, Turkish forces began an invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 1974 . The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was proclaimed on November 18, 1983 . Between 1983 and 1984 the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus used a flag that had a reverse color sequence compared to today.

Law No. 15/1984 on the flag was adopted on March 7, 1984 by the Parliament of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and entered into force on March 9, 1984 when it was published in the official newspaper. Since the international community of states, with the exception of Turkey, does not recognize the state, this also applies to its national flag .

Article 5 (1) consolidates the principle that the official flag of the Republic represents not only the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , but also the Turkish population of Cyprus.
