Fringes are ornamental edges made of textile threads that are located on the hems of textiles such as scarves, flags or epaulettes . They can be created by tearing or cutting or by knotting the long protruding warp threads of a fabric at the hems only in groups. In these thread groups, additional yarn can be knotted in order to create more fullness, similar to a tassel . Fringes are used as an aesthetic means. This form of embellishment of garments or carpets is widespread and is considered to be one of the earliest embellishments on garments.

In textile knitting technology , fringe is the name for a single chain of stitches that has no side connection with neighboring stitches (see picture). It is created by the needle of a knitting machine by pulling the thread through the loop of the previous stitch and creating a new stitch loop. The result is similar to the chain stitch when crocheting .
