The flag of Kyrgyzstan shows a yellow sun with 40 rays on a red background ( red is one of the traditional Mongolian colors). The rays represent the Kyrgyz tribes.

The rays run counterclockwise on the front of the flag and clockwise on the back. In the center of the sun there is a red ring, which is crossed twice by three lines each. These lines are a stylized representation of a roof ( tündük ) of a traditional Kyrgyz yurt .

The flag was adopted on March 3, 1992.

history

Tündük , crown of a yurt

Settled since the Bronze Age , the country has carried several flags throughout history. With the creation of the Kokand Khanate , the tribal people received their own state, which was conquered by Russia in 1876 .

Under the Russians, the area of Kyrgyzstan was combined with the other Central Asian khanates to form the General Government of Turkestan , and this carried a flag that was modeled on the Ottoman one: a cloth divided nine times in red and white, on which a red field was placed between strips 3 and 7 and in the was a white crescent moon with a star. This indicated to the viewer that the population of Turkestan were predominantly of Turkic origin.

With the collapse of the Russian Empire (1917), this khanate became independent again, and there was a flag that was clearly Turkish influenced: a horizontally red and blue striped flag with a white crescent moon with a star.

The meaning of this flag was also clear: red-blue stood for the mixing of the Mongols with the Turks, and the Kara-Kirghiz at that time saw themselves as their heirs .

With the establishment of the USSR , Kyrgyzstan became part of the Autonomous Soviet Republic of Turkestan ; their flag was the red cloth of the communists , in the upper corner a gold-framed red field with the initials of the state name in Arabic characters.

After the dissolution of the ASSR Turkestan (1924), the Kyrgyz ASSR was founded within Russia , which in addition to Kyrgyzstan also included the later Kazakhstan . The flag of this ASSR became that of the Russian province of Turkestan, from now on Kyrgyzstan shared the flag history of Kazakhstan .

With the constitution of 1936 the independent ASSR Kyrgyzstan was founded. Their flag has been the communist red cloth since March 31, 1937, in the upper corner of which the country name ( Kyrgyz and Russian ) was given in the serif font (Kyrgyz QЬRƢЬZ SSR until 1940 , then КЫРГЫЗ ССР , and Russian КИРГИЗСКАЯ ССР ).

On December 22, 1952, a version of the Soviet flag was introduced, which also had a blue-bordered white central stripe: the blue color stood for the Kyrgyz people and the white for the country's snow-capped mountains. The symbols hammer, sickle and star were found on the front of the flag.

There are different reports as to whether, between the fall of the USSR in 1991 and the introduction of the current flag, the flag of the SSR was used without the " hammer and sickle symbol" and communist star or with these symbols. The current flag was adopted in 1992.
