Montérégie is an administrative region ( French région administrative ) in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .

It is further divided into 14 regional county municipalities ( municipalités régionales de comté ) and 179 municipalities and reserves. The region is named after the Montérégie hills .

The population is 1,456,743, the land area 11,110.8 km², which corresponds to a population density of 131.1 inhabitants per km² (2011). 91.8% of the population speak French and 6.9% speak English as their main language.

Montérégie borders the US states of Vermont and New York to the south, the province of Ontario to the west, the Laurentides administrative region to the northwest , and Montreal and Lanaudière to the north .

In contrast to most other administrative regions, Montérégie does not have a uniform, higher-level administrative structure for the entire region, but is divided into three areas, each with a regional council (conférence régionale des élus) ;

  • CRE de Longueuil: The five municipalities that are not part of an MRC, synonymous with the Longueuil agglomeration . The administrative seat is Longueuil .
  • CRE Montérégie Est: The MRC Acton, La Haute-Yamaska, La Vallée-du-Richelieu, Le Bas-Richelieu, Le Haut-Richelieu, Les Maskoutains, Marguerite-D'Youville and Rouville. The administrative seat is McMasterville .
  • CRE Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent: The MRC Beauharnois-Salaberry, Le Haut-Saint-Laurent, Les Jardins-de-Napierville, Roussillon and Vaudreuil-Soulanges. The administrative seat is Salaberry-de-Valleyfield .
