geography

Before 1912, the northernmost area, the Ungava Peninsula , was assigned to the Northwest Territories as the Ungava District ; until 1987 it was referred to as Nouveau Québec . North du Québec is bounded by Hudson Bay and James Bay in the west, the Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay in the north and Labrador in the northeast. In the south and south-east are the administrative regions Abitibi-Témiscamingue , Mauricie , Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Côte-Nord .

administration

North du Québec does not have a uniform, superordinate administrative structure for the entire region, but is divided into three areas, each with a regional council ( conférence régionale des élus ).

  • To the north of the 55th parallel is Nunavik , which consists almost entirely of a tundra landscape . The region is predominantly inhabited by Inuit people who live in 14 "Nordic villages" (villages nordiques) along the coast. Nunavik is administered by the Kativik regional government (Administration régionale Kativik) , with the exception of the village of Whapmagoostui . The main town is Kuujjuaq .
  • Jamésie is the area south of the 55th parallel that is largely covered by boreal coniferous forest. The region consists of the municipality of Baie-James , which covers almost the entire area, and four enclaves that have the status of independent municipalities ( Chibougamau , Chapais , Lebel-sur-Quévillon and Matagami ). The main town is Matagami.
  • The Eeyou Istchee Regional Council has existed since 2007 and comprises the areas administered by the Grand Council of the Cree. There are eight enclaves in Jamésie and one enclave (Whapmagoostui) in Nunavik, each with a Cree village.
