Chibougamau is a city in the south of the administrative region of North du Québec in the Canadian province of Québec .
The city is located in the Jamésie territory, which is only for statistical purposes a regional county municipality ( municipalité régionale de comté ) and was founded as a factory settlement in 1952 after ore deposits ( copper and other metals) were discovered in the area. It is the largest city in northern Québec.
The city is located in a landscape rich in lakes. To the east are the two largest: Lac aux Dorés and Lac Chibougamau . The river Rivière Chibougamau drains this and flows in a large arc south and west around the city.
