Nunavik ( Inuktitut ᓄᓇᕕᒃ) is the northernmost part of both the Labrador Peninsula and the Canadian province of Québec , where it belongs to the administrative region of North du Québec . The land area, located beyond the 55th parallel, is approximately 510,000 square kilometers and is enclosed by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in the east, the Hudson Strait and Ungavabai in the northeast and Hudson Bay in the west. Nunavik is separated from the opposite Inuit Territory of Nunavut by the Hudson Strait . Nunavik was also given special rights for the Inuit who lived there .

Population and infrastructure

Nunavik has around 11,000 inhabitants, about 90% of whom are ethnic Inuit and live in 14 coastal settlements. The Cree Indian settlement Whapmagoostui is also located directly at Kuujjuarapik . The name "Nunavik" is Inuktitut and means "land in which one can live"; the Inuit who live here call themselves "Nunavimmiut" accordingly. The largest settlements of Nunavik are Kuujjuaq , which is also the administrative center, as well as Inukjuaq , Puvirnituq , Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq .

There is no road connection from Nunavik to the southern part of Québec. All year round there is air connection with all settlements ( Air Inuit , First Air ); in summer and autumn supplies are also provided by transport ships.

administration

Politically, Nunavik belonged to the Northwest Territories ( Ungava area ) until 1912 , and since then to the province of Québec. An agreement between the Canadian federal government, the province of Québec and representatives of the Inuit (the Jamesbai Agreement and the Quebec North) brought with the establishment of an administration régionale Kativik ("Kativik regional government") of the Nunavik region in 1978 an expanded political autonomy. All residents of the 14 northern settlements, both Inuit and non-Inuit, choose e.g. B. in regional elections their own MPs. The Kativik regional government's expenses are covered 50% by the Province of Québec and 25% by the Canadian state and by local income.

The Makivik Corporation , also based in Kuujjuaq , represents the Inuit of Northern Québec before the government of Québec and the Canadian federal government. The aim is to expand political autonomy in the Nunavik region. The last negotiations led z. B. an agreement regulating traditional rights for the use of resources on the islands off the coast of Nunavik, which all belong to the territory of Nunavut.

The Whapmagoostui settlement , a Cree enclave on Hudson Bay, is subordinate to the Cree regional authority ( Administration régionale cri ), which in turn is part of the “Great Council of the Cree” ( Eeyou Istchee in the Cree language).

The also at the Côte-Nord living Naskapi -Indianer heard a designated hunting area; they are subordinate to the Kativik regional government.
