Outaouais [ utawɛ ] is an administrative region ( French région administrative ) in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec .
It is further divided into four regional county municipalities ( French municipalités régionales de comté ) and 75 municipalities, reserves and unincorporated areas. The administration is based in Gatineau .
The population is 368,181 (2011) on a land area of 30,503.8 km², which corresponds to an average population density of 12.5 inhabitants per km². More than two thirds of the population live in Gatineau. Therefore, the remaining part is only sparsely populated with 3.4 inhabitants / km². 83.5% of the population speak French and 14.8% English as their main language.
Outaouais borders the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region in the north, Mauricie in the northeast, Laurentides in the east, and the province of Ontario in the south .
Gatineau Park lies entirely within the region .
